Since its introduction in April, Econet Wireless’s EcoCloud platform has been giving Zimbabweans a locally hosted option for uploading and storing files through affordable monthly subscriptions. As one of the first major cloud services built and operated in Zimbabwe, EcoCloud offers an alternative to global platforms like Google Drive and Dropbox.
EcoCloud has also made cloud storage more accessible by integrating payment methods that most Zimbabweans already use every day. Subscribers can buy bundles by dialing *143#, then selecting option 3 for Data, and option 8 for EcoCloud Storage. Payment can also be made using EcoCash and airtime, removing the need for credit cards or international payment systems. This approach has opened up cloud storage to students, small businesses, and individuals who previously found it out of reach.
One of EcoCloud’s key strengths is that it was designed for local users. Because the platform is hosted in Zimbabwe, data does not have to travel through international servers. This can mean faster access for local users and greater alignment with local data needs.
As usage has grown, several limitations in the user experience have become apparent. Since July, some users have experienced problems paying through EcoCash and airtime, which has resulted in delayed or failed renewals.
The interface is also not user-friendly and does not allow for in-app operations such as renewing subscriptions. Users must exit the app and use the USSD code to purchase or renew bundles.
Another gap is in file management. Currently, EcoCloud does not offer in-app previews, so users need to download a file to confirm its contents. Adding preview functionality would make it easier for people who store large numbers of documents, photos, and videos, especially those managing storage on limited data bundles.
Despite these challenges, the demand for affordable, local cloud storage is clear. More Zimbabweans are creating content, running small businesses, and looking for safe ways to back up important files. With its local infrastructure and familiar payment options, EcoCloud is well positioned to meet that need.
As it moves past its launch phase, EcoCloud has the potential to become the preferred cloud storage option for Zimbabwe. It represents an important step toward a digital ecosystem that is built in Zimbabwe, for Zimbabweans, and paid for the Zimbabwean way.
